Throwing Knife sequence/ camera work reflection

Camera work

What I have learnt is how to setup the tripod and camera and then use the different features to create different shots. The tripod has a positioning holder which the camera to be panned left to right or right to left. Also it allows the head to be tilt up or down to be used or high angled shots and low angled shots depending on the height of the tripod. To create high angled shots the tripod can be lifted with the head tilted down to record shots that would be hard to record high up. The camera can be hand held to create suspense during chase scenes. This will create a shaking effect while running. This would be great for horror sequences. Another technique is to tilt the camera using the head to its side to create disorientation for the audience and discomfort. This would be suitable for scenes that could be a dream sequence or a sense of chaos.

With these techniques we can create different scenarios by altering the positioning of the camera and the angle we want the camera to be. The video above is an example of the types of shots we can create for a scenario when it is put together. We did do an over the shoulder shot but I didn't use it as I think it was good as it is. But looking back I think I can use during the knife throw which probably would've made it a lot better for the audience.

How to setup the Tripod and camera

To setup the Tripod you have to release the leg locks on the legs to extend them out. Once the legs have been extended secure them by pushing the clips on the leg locks back in. There are 3 legs with 2 clips on each so make sure its secure or the leg will retract back to middle. Next you push using the positioning handle to lower the head. To check if its level out there is a spirit level on the side on the tripod which shows the levelness.  Moving the head will allow you to detach the clip which the camera will be placed on. To do this you pull the release lock which will detach the clip from the head. Once this is done attach the camera to the clip and place it back onto the head using the release lock. Once placed the camera should be setup but if you want to raise the camera a bit more use the extendable centre using the lever on side to raise it or lower it. Do this by rotating the lever like what you do on a fishing rod.

Here's a diagram showing the features of a Tripod.

  1. Could you add some images to improve this post?
The camera and tripod in operation perhaps. Also explain why the tripod is such an important bit of kit.
