Q2.

Q.2 How effective is the combination of your main product and ancillary texts?

For my A2 media coursework I and my group were required to a film trailer and two print products for our ancillary task. The two print products were a Film poster/ Billboard and a magazine cover. The genre for the film was a romantic comedy so I began research on the different forms and conventions that surround the genre. This will help give an idea of the selling point for each product I created. The reason for doing this is that it will help me attract my audience and try and keep them interested into the film as a whole.

Magazine cover
For my Magazine cover, I researched different real media products to help give me ideas on the sort of conventions magazine covers have. So I looked at the main coverlines, tag lines, titles, image used, pugs and house style. The magazine companies that i researched was Empire and Total Films as those two were the most popular. I compared the two companies through the magazines and saw similarities as well as differences. Here are some examples I analysed.

Empire

Total Film

With what I analysed I produced plans on the design of the magazine cover. It had to sell the audience be attractive and important of all connected to the other products. Below is my analysis of my film magazine.

Billboard poster
For the Billboard I did research on movie posters to see what the common conventions are. The selling points are the same but it gives the audience a glimpse at what's in store in the film. I looked at any poster from any genre. As the magazine I looked at the house style, the image, the tagline, the title, the production credits and actors. I also looked at similar posters for my chosen genre to see how they put the conventions together.

With this research I produced a a design which has all the conventions I have researched. Below is my billboard poster with all the appropriate conventions. This is best design I could do to attract my audience. I think this is a very effective movie billboard as it relates to the movie trailer The image overlaps to create an effect. Plus to interest the audience the the watch is there to be the object of significance. This will show what the film is about.

Movie trailer
To research about movie trailers I looked at teaser trailers for other Rom coms to see how the different shots are sequenced together to produce an interesting and attractive. It must have a good plt but enough to attract. Too much will give it away and will spoil the film. I looked at the different camera angles, intertitles, voiceover and the sequence. I also looked at the relevant colours that represent a Rom com. The trailer focuses on the main character throughout so for my trailer I had to focus on that. Length is another important feature as if it was too long it will bore the audience. This is the important product as the other media texts will connect to this.

Evaluation of Rom com movie posters

Love Actually

Poster 1

In this poster it is made to be fitted as a billboard. The image has all the main characters of the film with the pop star higher at the back in a pose. The theme is Christmas as it has decorated trees in the background representing the time this film is set. The characters are in a line above the bow tie. It has been done like that as it is landscape. In the remaining space, the poster has reviews in different bold lettering and different size fonts to stand out to audiences of how good the film is. Then to really stand out at the top the poster has "Don't miss the biggest Romantic Comedy of the year" to attract audiences. The house-style for the poster uses a white background and a red and black text font. The font will stand out from the background but also a good mix in the title.

Poster 2

In poster two is an billboard size poster but has a few different elements compared to poster 1. In poster one the characters were in a line but on this they are placed in a square so that the bow will make it look like a present. Which at the same time creates the time of the movie which is Christmas. The title is placed on the right hand side and compared to poster one their is no reviews to hook audience. The tagline on this poster has changed to "The Ultimate Romantic Comedy". Each character on this poster is in the same pose as poster 1 but in a location. For example Hugh Grant and Liam Neeson are in a shopping lane and Bill Nighy and Rowan Atkinson are in a music video scene.

Production company mood board

This is a Mood board of different production companies. These will help give an idea to what specific elements help create a logo. This mood boards contains some of the most well known companies in the industry. Companies like Universal, Warner. Bros and Walt Disney. On a production company logo it should have a theme that the title can relate too. For example the Walt Disney pictures logo has an image of a castle to represent its genre of fairy tales and fantasy. Once it has a theme, the text style can be made to specifically follow that particular house style the theme has. For example, the Legendary pictures has the same style and colour to match the design above. It gives it that historic look to it. Another thing to point that occurs a lot is has a particular setting that makes the logo unique. For example, Paramount's logo has it blend in with the mountain it self to make it the log itself. Another example is Universal and how it uses earth as its main logo focus. Plus because of this it fits with the film title as its called "Universal". Dreamworks too follows this by having a man fish on the edge of a crescent moon.
